Helping Local Seniors Meet Essential Needs
Many older adults in our community are living on limited incomes and may struggle to afford basic necessities such as rent, food, prescriptions, transportation, clothing, toiletries, and other essential expenses.
The Seniors Community Fund provides practical financial assistance to seniors in Barrie and the surrounding area who are experiencing financial hardship.
The Need in Our Community
Approximately one in five Ontario seniors lives in poverty.
The existing material also highlights several local affordability concerns:
- The annual cost of living in Barrie is estimated at $46,272.
- The poverty line is identified as approximately $27,624.
- The average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Barrie is approximately $1,900.
- Some low-income seniors receive monthly incomes of $1,892 or less.

The Seniors Community Fund provides financial assistance of $100 to $500 to eligible seniors living on low incomes who are having difficulty paying for basic necessities.
Assistance may be considered for expenses including:
- Rent
- Food
- Medical needs
- Transportation
- Delivered meals
- Personal necessities
- Veterinary services
- Other urgent basic needs
A senior couple requiring assistance may submit one joint application. Each senior may be considered for assistance of between $100 and $500.

Applications may be submitted at any time.
An application may be made:
- directly by the senior
- by a family member
- by a caregiver
- by a community agency
- by a nonprofit organization
All applications are treated with privacy and confidentiality.
NOTE: CARP membership is not required to apply.

How Applications Are Reviewed
Applications are reviewed by the CARP Barrie Chapter’s Application Review Subcommittee.
The subcommittee is made up of volunteers selected by the CARP Barrie Chapter. Funding may be provided at any time, subject to available resources and the subcommittee’s review.
Approved assistance may be provided in the form of:
- Gift cards
- Gift certificates
- Cheques
The form of payment is determined by the subcommittee based on the circumstances of the application.
How To Apply
Complete the Seniors Community Fund application form and provide the requested supporting information. Then email the application to barriescf@outlook.com.
Supporting the Fund
The Seniors Community Fund depends on community support. Donations help provide direct assistance to local seniors who are struggling to pay for essential needs. The fund also works with community partners to identify seniors who may require support and may distribute grocery vouchers, rent assistance, and help with other necessities.
